Kansas City Northland Soccer

Welcome to Fall Soccer 2015

Thanks everyone for helping to form the competitive team and I look forward to coaching the kids this year.

Unfortunately I had asked for Wednesday night practice but the field was already taken.

I will be hopefully getting another practice time during the week but this is all they will currently let me have.

Practice will be on Monday night starting at 5:45 PM behind the Liberty Community Center/Middle School.

We will also hold practice on Wednesday night starting 8/19 at 5:45 PM at the Westbourough/Canterbury Greenway field  (1400 W Canterbury Ln, Liberty MO) next to the baseball diamond.

Also we will only have one Saturday practice from 10:00-11:00 AM on 08/15 so please make plans to have your kids to these practices.

I will be also posting short videos on soccer training please have your kids watch these!  It is extremely important that they get outside and start kicking the ball around.  Please have them play keep away with a sibling or parent.  Do remember this is competitive soccer so don't go easy as there will be physical contact on the field.  I need them use to the challenge of going for the ball.
We will be reviewing the videos and referring to them during practice so it is very important they watch them and actually listen :-)

I will also make some notes on the video. I would like for you to discuss with the kids to get them thinking.  Soccer is a game of strategy and awareness.  Instead of being drawn to the ball like a magnetic should I be concerned about the player standing in the middle of our goal?  Is what I want them thinking about.

Two important documents that need to be reviewed:

2014 Soccer Information

Hi, I'm Chris Jones  and I will be the coach for your kid's soccer u12 team. If you have any questions please let me know.  I will update this webpage so please check here for schedule's and to see if practice is cancelled.
I look forward to Coaching and Having Fun with the Kids. This is my 8th season of coaching Liberty recreational soccer.
The team name will be Green Lightning and our color is Navy Blue with Forest Green.

I will post the soccer game schedule once it is released and on past experience it will come out at the last moment. The games will be held on Monday and Tuesday nights.
Games Will be held at the below location:
We will also have a snack schedule as this actually seems to be the kids most favorite part
The soccer ball we will be using is size 4 if you have one please bring to practice.
All kids are required to have shin guards.
The main distinction between soccer and baseball shoes is the layout of the cleats on the bottom. On soccer cleats you will see there’s never a single cleat on the very front tip. The main reason there’s not a single cleat at the front is because it can easily cause injury to an opposing player’s shin. Soccer cleats typically have two front cleats that are spread apart. If you have cleats from baseball or football you can cut this front cleat off and use them. The nice thing about soccer cleats is they can be used in the other sports without modification.

Let me know if you have any questions.

How to Protect the Soccer Ball

Please watch this video on how to keep the opposing team back when you have the ball.  It is all about using your whole body and managing the ball.

Soccer Positioning 4-4-2 Soccer Formation

Please watch as this will help with our positioning.

Positioning in soccer is one of the most important aspects to winning.

We will be working on this positioning over and over to make sure we don't chase the ball in a group.

Soccer Offside Rule Explained

Please watch this video.

If you play defense I want you to think about how we can use this rule to the teams advantage. Please come to practice with your thoughts on how we can put it to use.

Soccer - Throw In

Please review this video on soccer throw ins.  We need to make sure we don't turn over the ball to the other team for something so simple.

Please Remember:
  • Both feet have to be on the ground.  If you lift a foot we lose the ball.
  • Throw has to be both hands and overhead
  • When throwing the ball in never throw it in the middle of the field unless we are close to the goal our team is trying to score in.
  • 90% of the time at this level of a team you will want to thrown the ball down the sideline
  • Be quick to get the ball and throw it in while other team is not organized
  • If your not throwing it in get in receiving position quickly if your a forward or midfield
  • I prefer one of of our defensive players to hustle and throw it in and then hustle back to their position
  • Throw ins can make or break our game when scoring goals and moving the ball down the field

Soccer - Defending the Goal

Key Points for Defenders:

  • Being aware of all the attackers and their positions!  Not just where the ball is at.
  • Defender to stay goal side.  This means to stay between the attacker and the goal.  Don't ever leave you goalie by themselves!  If the attacker maneuvers around you RUN and get back between that goal and the attacker.
  • Remain 3 Feet away from attacker to contain the attacker
  • Jockeying getting in the attackers way is very important.  If you do this it will give the rest of the team the chance to help out.
  • FYI slide tackles are allowed and it will depend on the referee. (Slide tackles from the back are not allowed)
